Discounted Futures examines the vulnerability of education and childhood in contemporary Nigeria. The Nigerian colours on the arm, marked with a “90% OFF” tag, transform national identity into a commodity, questioning the value placed on children’s lives, safety and futures. The newspaper-covered surface draws from reports of children abducted from schools in Northern Nigeria, turning current events into a living archive of collective anxiety. Books emerge as symbols of knowledge and possibility, while the ambiguous bag—potentially carrying books or money—questions whether education is a pathway to liberation or another economic burden. Through Abfillage, I confront how education, security and childhood can become dangerously negotiable.
